World Golf Championships, Cricket World Cup, Barbados, Island Parties, Events and Festivals - Oistins Fish Festival

A flying fish in the markets of the island.A two-day event, the Oistins Fish Festival is held on Easter Weekend in April. The festival pays tribute to the skills of the fisherman and gives them a chance to display their considerable skill. The island's main fishing town of Oistins hosts the action and is located close to the capital on the south coast of Barbados.

Competitions in fishing, crab racing, fish boning, and boat racing award the best of the fishing folk. Dance to steel bands, or mingle on the beach, in the market place and the rum shops that line the roadside. Food stalls, arts and crafts and demonstrations by the Coast Guard are also part of the activities.

Barbados is often called the "Land of the Flying Fish" and this fancifully shaped creature still forms a large part of the islanders' diet. Seasoned with black and red peppers, parsley, thyme, paprika, lime juice, and other spices, the fish is usually served steamed, fried or baked. You'll definitely want to keep on the lookout for this delicacy at the Oistins Fish Festival!
