Flowers of BarbadosBarbados is home to some of the most exotic flowers in the world, attracting many visitors to its sunny shores. Some of the more unusual plant species include the century plant, or “maypole” which produces vivid yellow flowers only once in its lifecycle. Also very rare are the island’s cacti flowers which last a single day. Tropical gems in the orchid family grow in the branches of trees all over the island and attract lively communities of hummingbirds and insects. The vibrant landscape has inspired a group of internationally recognized “green thumbs” and beautiful gardens throughout Barbados.

Flowers of BarbadosIn 1927 the Barbados Horticultural Society was created and it remains one of the oldest associations of its kind in the British Commonwealth. The Society has focused on exhibitions throughout its long history, and now has its headquarters and exhibition hall on Balls Plantation in Christ Church. Members of the society frequently travel abroad, winning top honours in prestigious gatherings such as the Chelsea Flower Show. Members of the Barbados Flower Arranging Society have also won medals at the show.

Bajans are proud of the gorgeous flowers of the island. The national flower of Barbados is a deep red colour framed in yellow and called the “Pride of Barbados”. It is easily found planted in thick hedges throughout the country.
