Barbados has a comparatively high standard of health care, which is easily accessible to all. The main Government operated health care facilities are the 600- bed Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a general hospital which offers specialised care in such areas as gynecology, pediatrics, obstetrics, plastic surgery, radiology, radiography, psychotherapy; and the 627- bed Psychiatric Hospital responsible for mental health.

There are also eight (8) government Polyclinics providing free medical attention for minor ailments, and dental treatment in some cases; five Geriatric Hospitals for care and treatment of the elderly; a network of Child Care facilities operated by the Child Care Board; and a National Nutrition Centre.

All emergencies are referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Ambulance Service Tel: 511.

Besides the government institutions, there are several privately operated Clinics, Hospitals and Nursing Homes. Private Nursing care is available through the Private Nursing Network Inc.

The health care system is supported by well qualified doctors and nurses trained at leading institutions around the world. Doctors and their specialisations are listed in the Yellow Pages of the Barbados Telephone Directory.
