Both mountain biking and road cycling enjoy a healthy existence on Barbados. The island is covered with trails in the stunning hills of the central region and offer fantastic panoramic views of the coastline. Road racers will likely prefer the smooth flat curves of the northern coastline which all but guarantee a thrilling ride. Bajans love to jump into the saddle! The Prime Minister of Barbados has a special place in his heart for cycling, having been actively involved in both the Barbados Cycling Union and the Shell Saddle Boys Cycling Club. Barbados has sent cyclists to the Pan Am Games and top riders like local legend Barry Forde compete both internationally and regionally. Bicycles tours are offered from many of the hotels, as well as by independent guides, and bikes can be rented from several shops. Visitors may be surprised to find that car rental agencies occasionally rent bicycles. Helmets are mandatory on Barbados and caution is recommended as the roads do not have bike lanes and the shoulders are quite slim.
